Working with your Canon drivers

Canon manufacturers numerous hardware devices for computers including printers, scanners, network video cameras, and digital cameras. In order for your computer to understand these devices, it needs Canon drivers to explain what they are and how to interact with them.

When you first purchased the Canon device, it likely came with an installation disc containing these drivers. If the device is a “Plug and Play” device, you may not have needed to manually install the Canon drivers because the operating system has them preinstalled.

However, no matter which way you installed the drivers, you ought to consider updating them for improved performance. If your Canon product is malfunctioning, your first step should be to update the drivers. Both scenarios have the potential to improve your devices.

What happens when device Canon drivers are out-of-date

First, let's look what happens when something goes wrong with the original Canon drivers. If the drivers are missing or corrupt, suddenly, Windows no longer recognizes your device or loads a generic driver. Your device will either stop working altogether or operate with limited functionality. By replacing these missing Canon drivers, you'll solve your original problem and the device will work as it was designed to work.

Now, let's look at what happens when nothing goes wrong with the original drivers. Everything is working the way it was when you first installed the device. However, what if Canon released some cool new features the last time they updated their drivers? You'd be missing out. Likewise, if they repaired known issues or made a change that increased performance, you'd also be missing out. By updating your Canon drivers, you'll improve your device and avoid potential problems that have been solved with the update.

How to find your Canon drivers updates

You can go to the Canon Web site and download updated Canon drivers for any of your Canon devices. Go to the Support area and enter the details of your product. If updated Canon drivers are available you can download them to your hard drive and install them using either the Device Manager for standard devices or the Add Printer Driver Wizard for printers.

The Device Manager is located in the Control Panel. In the Classic View, you should find Device Manager listed on its own or under the System icon. Once launched, Device Manager categorizes each device by type. Go to the appropriate category and find your device. Double-click and then choose the Driver tab. Now, click on Update Driver and follow the prompts for finding the downloaded Canon drivers.

The process for updating Canon drivers is different for Canon printers than it is for other devices. For updating your printer's drivers, you'll need to go into the Control Panel and find the Printer Icon. Find your printer in the list and right-click it. Choose Properties. Now, click the Advanced tab where you'll see the current driver installed. To launch the Add Printer Driver Wizard, click on New Driver. This wizard is much like the original process you went through when you first installed your printer. If recently downloaded an updated driver, choose Have Disk and browse to the location where you originally downloaded it.
