Working with your Linksys drivers

Linksys manufactures a variety of networking devices including routers, wireless routers, network adapters, print servers, game adapters, cameras, VoIP equipment, and modems. Hardware devices must communicate with the computer in order to function. The computer must know how to recognize and communicate with the devices. This is accomplished through the use of device drivers.

Linksys products ship with the required Linksys drivers. Once installed the computer and devices know how to interact with each other. If all goes well, your computer and Linksys products will operate together seamlessly for years to come. However, hardware and device driver problems can and will occur. Device drivers are like any computer file or program in that they can become corrupt or go missing. If your computer suddenly cannot find the Linksys device, there's a good chance that something happened to the Linksys drivers.

Improve system performance with Linksys drivers updates

What could have happened? Any number of things can affect device drivers including file corruption due to spyware, power surges, and unexpected shutdowns. In addition adding new hardware and software can cause conflicts with your previously-functional devices. In many cases, simply reinstalling the Linksys drivers is all it takes to restore your devices.

However, while simply reinstalling Linksys drivers may restore your system, updating them may actually enhance your system. This is because Linksys regularly updates their products even after the products have been sold to people like you. These updates are often included in the form of updated Linksys drivers. For example, as new technologies are adopted, manufacturers often incorporate these new technologies into existing products. By updating your device drivers, you are able to upgrade your products for free!

In addition to taking advantage of any new features or enhancements that Linksys may have provided, updating your drivers rather than using your existing drivers also helps to repair known issues and conflicts with your device. For example, as Linksys discovers problems, they correct these problems in the form of updated Linksys drivers. By updating your hardware with device drivers, you can avoid many potential problems and solve any currently addressed.

The benefits of staying current with Linksys drivers

Because of new features and problem resolution made available through updated drivers, it's beneficial to periodically check for updates, even if your Linksys products are functioning properly. Doing so is fairly easy. You can either use the Device Manager or go directly to the Linksys website. For example, let's say you have a Linksys network adapter. Go to the Device Manager (found in Control Panel under System or individually depending on your operating system) and go to the Network Adapter category. Click the plus sign next to this category and find your Linksys adapter in the list. Right-click it and choose Properties. Next, click the Driver tab. Click Update Driver and follow the prompts.

The Linksys Web site has a support area where you can look up your particular product and see if any Linksys drivers are available for download. It's helpful to know what version driver you currently have so that you don't waste time downloading the same one. While in the Device Manager's Property dialog box, click the Driver tab and select Driver Details. This will list the details including provider and version number.
