Getting the best from your NVIDIA drivers

NVIDIA graphics cards are among the best of the best with enhancements being made to the functionality of existing cards and technological leaps being made with each new series developed. If you have an existing NVIDIA graphics card, you may be able to take advantage of the technological advances without having to replace your current card with a new one. How? By updating your NVIDIA drivers!

It pays to update!

Did you know that hardware manufacturers update their device drivers just like software developers do? Like software developers, hardware device manufacturers often discover problems with their product after consumers have already purchased it. They address these problems by releasing updated drivers. In addition to fixing problems, driver updates can also incorporate new technology or add new features to the device.

For example, let's say you have a NVIDIA graphics card installed on your system and it has a conflict with your soundcard. If this is a known problem that NVIDIA has fixed, then a simple driver update is all that's required. What if NVIDIA has also enhanced your particular card? Perhaps they've incorporated new technology that delivers even clearer graphics and increased performance. By updating your device driver, you get all of the benefits of these enhancements without having to pay a penny.

"Do-it-yourself" device NVIDIA Drivers updates

NVIDIA regularly issues updates and makes them available on their Web site in the Download Drivers area. They offer two options for finding NVIDIA drivers: a manual search and a “Smart Scan.”

The manual search is fairly simple. First, pick the product type such as GeForce, Quadro, nForce, Tesla, or Legacy from the list. Next, pick the appropriate series and specific model number. Finally, pick the operating system and language. When selecting the operating system, you must be as specific as possible; Windows Vista 32-bit and Windows Vista 64-bit are completely different, each with its own specific NVIDIA drivers. Once the search has completed, you must agree to the terms and conditions before downloading the appropriate NVIDIA driver.

The SmartScan involves installing an ActiveX control and scanning your hardware and system software for NVIDIA products. This tool will determine if your NVIDIA drivers are current or not as well as make recommendations for improving your computer.

Another interesting way to make keeping your NVIDIA drivers up-to-date is by installing the NVIDIA widget on your personal Web site or configurable home page. By copying and pasting the code to your Web site, you get a quick link to the NVIDIA driver download widget. Now, whenever you visit your home page or Web site, you can quickly and automatically check your NVIDIA drivers.

When downloading NVIDIA drivers from their Web site, you should disable any download accelerators you have installed as well as stop your virus protection from running in the background during driver installation. According to NVIDIA, this prevents the drivers from configuring properly.

Your NVIDIA graphics card is likely powerful, especially if you own one of the latest GeForce cards. Technical innovations such as Scalable Link Interface allow for even greater performance boosts and lightning fast graphics. However, all of this power is for naught when your NVIDIA drivers become corrupt or are hopelessly out of date. Updating your drivers is excellent insurance to ensure that you have the latest technology available for your device powering your graphics.

An ingenious alternative to time-consuming, "D-I-Y" NVIDIA drivers updates

In addition to visiting NVIDIA's Web site, you can automate driver updates by using DriverCure. This software is designed to identify your hardware and regularly update your drivers.
